The presentation will go into state-of-the-art thinking, science and debate on the large scale use of biomass for energy and materials. Insights from the extensive scientific assessment work of the IPCC (Special Report on Renewable Energy and the 5th Assessment report) in which the presenter was involved will be used to identify the preconditions under which large scale biomass deployment can be realized in a sustainable way.
Key preconditions relate to better governance of land-use (e.g. zoning), steadily increased efficiency (both in terms of productivity and natural resource use as water and nutrients) in agriculture and livestock management, rural development combined with a balanced built up biomass resource mobilization and use. Examples from very different settings (e.g. Africa, Latin America, and Europe) will be given to illustrate how such integrated strategies may look like and how they could be implemented over time. Furthermore, some key options for China will be discussed.
