Title: Professor, B.Ed., BA (Hons), Ph.D., MACE, AICD
Professor Richard Smith began his working life as a schoolteacher in Papua New Guinea before completing a doctorate in Anthropology. He was Pro-Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Education at CQ University Australia until his retirement as Emeritus Professor in July 2008. He is presently a Part-Time Professor in the School of Education at Southern Cross University and Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Australian Institute of Music (AIM) in Sydney. For 6-years, Richard chaired the Queensland (Australian state) Minister for Education’s ‘Think-tank’ that advised the government on Education policy. He has a distinguished record in publishing papers, reports and books and in successful postgraduate supervision at Honours, Masters and Doctorate levels. Richard has been President of the Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) and editor of the Australian Journal of Education, as well as contributing editor to several international education research and sociological journals. He was a founding editor of Discourse, now a leading international social science publication. His academic and applied interests lie in the reform and development of all levels of education for the future, transdisciplinary social policy research and development. Richard has a long association with international education, cultural exchanges and cross-cultural collaboration and has a special relationship with a number of higher education institutions in China. His current interest is Chinese culture and history and understanding the richness of Chinese cultures and society.
