The Northwest China accounts for 36% of the country’s total area, but only 8% of its water resources. Drought and water shortage coexist with fragile ecological environment, and crop water use efficiency is low. Water-saving irrigation is an important way to solve these problems. The northwest is a vast region with different agricultural types. The regional adaptability and system integration of water-saving irrigation products are poor, the research on green, efficient, and water-saving irrigation technology and equipment is relatively weak, and there is a lack of standardized and patterned system solutions for different agricultural areas. Here we present the results and fruits of four aspects aiming to solving the problems: (1) Mechanism and regulation model of efficient water use for main crops in northwest China; (2) Green and efficient water-saving irrigation equipment suitable for typical agricultural areas in Northwest China; (3) Key technical models of irrigation water distribution system and field engineering; and (4) Integration of water-saving irrigation technology system in typical agricultural areas of Northwest China.
